How Long Does Cabinet Refinishing Take in Houston?

Most projects take 5-7 business days from door removal to final reinstallation. Here's exactly what happens each day — and why rushing leads to failure.

"How long will this take?" is the first question every homeowner asks. The honest answer: 5-7 business days for a typical Houston kitchen with 20-30 cabinet doors. Here's our day-by-day breakdown so you know exactly what to expect.

The Quick Answer

A standard kitchen cabinet refinishing project (15-30 doors and drawer fronts) takes 5-7 business days from the morning we remove your doors to the afternoon we reinstall them. Your kitchen remains usable throughout — we only need access to your home for approximately 2 hours on Day 1 and 2-3 hours on the final day.

Larger kitchens (30-40+ doors), island cabinets, or projects involving color changes from dark to light may extend to 7-10 business days due to additional primer coats and cure time.

Day-by-Day Timeline

Day 1

Door Removal & Labeling

Your Home (2 hours)

Fernando and crew arrive, photograph every cabinet for reference, label each door and drawer front with a numbered system, remove all hardware, and carefully transport everything to our shop. Your cabinet boxes stay in place — you can still store dishes and use your kitchen normally.

Day 1-2

Degreasing & Sanding

Our Climate-Controlled Shop

Every surface is degreased with TSP solution to remove years of cooking oils and residue. Then we sand with 150-grit on a Festool HEPA-extracted orbital sander to create proper tooth for primer adhesion. Any damage, dents, or imperfections are filled with automotive-grade filler and re-sanded smooth.

Day 2-3

Primer Application & Cure

Our Climate-Controlled Shop

We apply Sherwin-Williams Extreme Bond primer via our Graco FinishPro HVLP system — atomized at 5-7 PSI for a glass-smooth base coat with zero brush marks. Doors cure for 24 hours at 72°F and 50-60% humidity. Dark-to-light color changes receive two primer coats (adding one extra day).

Day 3-4

Between-Coat Sanding

Our Climate-Controlled Shop

After primer cures, we lightly sand with 320-grit to remove any microscopic texture and create maximum adhesion for the topcoat. Surfaces are tack-clothed to remove all dust particles before spraying.

Day 4-5

Topcoat Application & Cure

Our Climate-Controlled Shop

Two coats of Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel applied via HVLP spray. First coat cures 24 hours, light 400-grit sand, then final coat applied. The result is a factory-smooth finish with zero orange peel, zero brush strokes — indistinguishable from new cabinet doors.

Day 5-7

Final Cure & Quality Check

Our Climate-Controlled Shop

Final topcoat cures for 24-48 hours. Fernando personally inspects every door and drawer front under LED task lighting, checking for any imperfections. Any piece that doesn't meet our standard gets re-sanded and re-sprayed. Only perfect pieces leave our shop.

Final Day

Reinstallation & Walkthrough

Your Home (2-3 hours)

We reinstall all doors and drawer fronts using our numbered labeling system, install new hardware (if purchased), adjust hinges for perfect alignment, and do a final walkthrough with you. Fernando reviews care instructions and your 5-year written warranty.

What Affects the Timeline?

Kitchen Size

A small kitchen with 10-15 doors can be completed in as few as 5 business days. A large kitchen with 30-40+ doors, a butler's pantry, or an island with panels may take 7-10 days simply because more pieces require more spray cycles and rack space in our shop.

Color Change Direction

Going from light to dark (e.g., honey oak to navy) is straightforward — one primer coat provides sufficient coverage. Going from dark to light (e.g., cherry to white) requires two primer coats to prevent bleed-through, adding 1-2 days for the extra application and cure cycle.

Condition of Existing Cabinets

Cabinets with significant damage, peeling laminate, or water damage require additional repair work before priming. We use automotive-grade Bondo for structural repairs and sand everything flush. This can add 1-2 days depending on the extent of damage.

Why We Don't Rush: The Science of Cure Time

Every coat of Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane needs a minimum of 24 hours to cure properly at controlled temperature and humidity. This isn't optional — it's chemistry. The urethane molecules need time to cross-link and form the hard, durable film that makes this paint last 10-15 years.

Painters who promise 2-3 day turnarounds are either skipping coats, using inferior products, or not allowing proper cure time. The result? Finishes that feel tacky, dent easily, or peel within 6-12 months — especially in Houston's 75-90% humidity.

Our 5-step process with proper cure time is why we can offer a 5-year written warranty on every project. The timeline isn't a limitation — it's what separates a professional refinish from a paint job that fails.
